About

Red Polygon S.T. is an independent game studio. We are building one game, Backrooms Universe, and the engine underneath it, Green Engine. That is the whole company.

Why the studio exists

A specific game did not exist and could not be built on anything available. Backrooms Universe needs a world that never resets, space that is not Euclidean, and lighting that holds up in a place where the light itself is part of the horror. Every existing engine asked for a compromise on at least one of those, so the engine came first, and the studio exists to finish both.

How we work

We are small and self-funded, and there is no publisher and no release date. That is deliberate. Scope is never cut to hit a date; a feature that is too large is sequenced, not shrunk. Where something is not good enough yet it stays unfinished and says so, rather than shipping as a stand-in. We would rather there were no Backrooms Universe than one that is not the thing described on the Vision page.

The work is documented as it is built: every architectural decision is a numbered ruling, every landing is recorded with the evidence that proves it, and the plan is re-audited against the code on a schedule. It is a small team's substitute for institutional memory, and it is what lets the project stay coherent over years rather than months.

What it is built on

Green Engine is written in C++ with the game layer in Rust, on a rendering backend we patched ourselves to add hardware ray tracing. Everything in it exists because the game needed it. The engine is not licensed to third parties and is not a product on its own; it is described on the Green Engine page.

Who

The studio is run by Knirby, a full-stack developer who founded both projects, writes most of the engine and the game, and made this website. She can be reached at knirby@redpolygon.net.

The canon, and who wrote it

Backrooms Universe adapts the writing of the Backrooms Wikidot and Fandom communities. Those authors made the canon this game is built to, and every level, entity, item and phenomenon that comes from their work is credited to them by name inside the game and in the game's wiki. The licence and the details are on the Legal & trademarks page.
